Our history

IMG_9334The oldest research unit of the Faculty of International and Political Studies (Wydział Studiów Międzynarodowych i Politologicznych) at the University of Lodz (Uniwersytet Łódzki). It was founded by Professor Waldemar Michowicz, who initially founded the Institute of International Studies (1994), which was later converted into the WSMiP (2000). The department conducted a project financed by the Committee for Scientific Research (Komitet Badań Naukowych) entitled “The History of Polish Diplomacy” (“Historia dyplomacji polskiej”), which resulted in a six-volume work of the same title.

Currently, the department has three main research themes:

  • Theoretical, political, military and non-military aspects of wars and conflicts in the 20th and 21st century

Professor Robert Łoś
id-losHead of the Department of Theory of Foreign and Security Policy (Katedra Teorii Polityki Zagranicznej i Bezpieczeństwa) at the University of Lodz (between 2006 and 2011 it was the Department of International Relations History), head of the “National Security” postgraduate studies. Specialist in the history of Germany after World War II, German foreign policy in Central and Eastern Europe and the theory of foreign policy with particular attention to the instruments of soft power.
Professor Przemysław Żurawski vel Grajewski
id-zurawskiAssistant Professor at the Department of Theory of Foreign and Security Policy (Katedra Teorii Polityki Zagranicznej i Bezpieczeństwa) at the University of Lodz, researcher at the History Institute (Instytut Historii) at the University of Lodz (1987 – 1995), expert at the Office of the Minister of National Defence for Defence Policy (Biuro Ministra Obrony Narodowej ds. Polityki Obronnej) (1992) and the Office of the Government Plenipotentiary for European Integration and Foreign Aid (Biuro Pełnomocnika Rządu ds. Integracji Europejskiej i Pomocy Zagranicznej) (1995 – 1996). Researcher at the European Institute in Lodz (Instytut Europejski) (1996 – 2001), lecturer at Collegium Civitas (2002 – 2004), EPP-ED European Parliament group expert (2005 – 2006), responsible for monitoring the European Union’s eastern policy. Analyst at Natolin European Centre (Centrum Europejskie Natolin) (2006 – 2012), visiting professor at the Belarusian European Humanities University in exile in Vilnius (2006 – 2009), since 2008 lecturer – associate at the Polish National School of Public Administration (Krajowa Szkoła Administracji Publicznej). Since 2012 has been regularly contributing to the “Gazeta Polska Codziennie” (“Polish Gazette Daily”) in the field of international, military and historical affairs. Member of Professor Piotr Gliński’s think tank, author of over 80 scientific papers and seven books.
Dr. Jacek Reginia – Zacharski
id-zacharskiAssistant Professor Adjunct at the Department of Theory of Foreign and Security Policy (Katedra Teorii Polityki Zagranicznej i Bezpieczeństwa) at the University of Lodz. Deputy Dean of Political Science at the University of Humanities and Economics in Lodz (Wyższa Szkoła Humanistyczno – Ekonomiczna) (2001 – 2003). Specializes in the following research fields: modern armed conflicts and crisis management systems, international organizations in modern politics, geopolitics and geostrategy in global and regional relations, the history of the Ukrainian state in the 20th and 21st centuries.
Dr. Robert Czulda
id-czuldaSpecialist in contemporary international security; defence and arms issues, Assistant Professor (Adjunct) at the Department of Theory of Foreign and Security Policy (Katedra Teorii Polityki Zagranicznej i Bezpieczeństwa) at the University of Lodz, graduate of the “National Security” postgraduate studies at the National Defence University (Akademia Obrony Narodowej) (2007), alumni of the “Young Leaders Dialogue with America” of the US Department of State (2010 – 2011), fellow of the Lanckoroński Foundation in London (2014), visiting lecturer at universities in Lithuania, Turkey and Slovakia, as well as the National Cheng-chi University in Taipei (Republic of China – Taiwan), within the framework of the “Taiwan Fellowship” programme (2013). Works as a freelance journalist for the following defense journals: “Polska Zbrojna” (“Armed Poland”), “Nowa Technika Wojskowa” (“New Military Technology”), “Lotnictwo” (“Aviation”), “Stosunki Międzynarodowe” (“International Relations”) and Germany-based “Military Technology”, where he runs his own column. Freelance contributor to IHS Jane’s.
